Living the Dream in Namibia

sandra0271

From European cityscapes to African horizons — how one dream turned into reality.

WHEN I FIRST SHARED MY DREAM of moving to Namibia all those years ago, my family and friends were understandably worried. Visions of Africa — its wilderness, mysterious creatures, and vast open spaces — led them to question every aspect of my future here: Where would I live? Would there be a proper house with actual walls, or would I be pitching a tent under the stars? And what About my children — would they get a decent education, or would I need to home school them under a baobab tree? Also, could

I even buy groceries, or was I destined to become an aspiring farmer (despite my less-than-stellar gardening record)?

I can now confirm that I do indeed live in a cosy house with a roof, in a perfectly safe neighbourhood. My dogs roam around joyfully, while our “extended neighbours” answer to names like Mr. and Mrs. Giraffe, Mr. and Mrs. Snake, and the occasional Tortoise. My daughters finished their schooling here and even earned their Abitur. As for groceries, I shop at the local supermarket — where I can find everything from Lindt chocolate and sour gherkins to Weisswürste — though I’ve also discovered a (surprising) green thumb, growing tomatoes in my own little garden.

Doctors and Hospitals ...
Doctors and Hospitals ...

But the real surprise for me was the medical support. I’d always known there were doctors and hospitals, but Nothing prepared me for how advanced and professional the care

would be. A few years ago, fresh out of the strangest times called Corona, I fell seriously ill. High fever, weakness, and painful breathing led me straight to Lady Pohamba Hospital on a Sunday morning. Even in my fog of discomfort, I could sense the competence and warmth around me — from the friendly nurses to the highly skilled doctors. They made me feel cared for, and that comfort alone brought me halfway back to health.

The equipment and technology were first-class — everything from an ultrasound to an MRI was on-site and state-of-the-art. They discovered I had a nasty case of pneumonia, but with the right medication, thorough aftercare, and a few weeks of (admittedly tough) rest, I bounced back to my old self.

So, yes, I traded a European cityscape for wide-open African skies, but let me tell you — I’m living my dream with all the modern perks. Sure, it’s a bit wilder here, but that’s precisely the charm. I have giraffes and frogs for neighbours, a welcoming community, and excellent healthcare just around the corner.

If you also have a story — be it an adventure, a funny mishap, or a life-changing moment — I’d love to hear about it!
