Embarking on a New Journey

A Column in Michelangelo Magazine

Recently, I embarked on an exciting new journey by starting a column in Michelangelo Magazine.

But where does one begin? Crafting words into a story is an art, and while I may not be a professional writer, I am passionate about sharing the experiences that make life extraordinary.

English might not be my first language—German holds that honor, and it’s a heritage I cherish deeply. Yet, even with my linguistic roots, there’s a universal language that transcends words: the language of travel and adventure.

For inspiration, nature provided a majestic giraffe that strides gracefully across a sunlit landscape, with a breathtaking African safari view stretching beyond. This is the essence of my inspiration—a scene that ignites wanderlust in every traveler’s heart.

I’m acutely aware of the spider glaring at me from the corner of my eye, but I keep telling myself it's not brave enough to dare. After all, even a spider doesn’t want a life expectancy shorter than the promise it was given.

Let me take you on a journey into my story. I was born into a family of two children in Stuttgart, Germany, where my family still lives. I am a passionate, trained teacher of German and Physical Education, and I am proud to call four daughters my own.

And there here was always a dream—the dream of Namibia.

By the age of... well, let’s just say I’ve accumulated enough birthdays to understand that life sometimes calls for more than just rearranging the furniture or buying a new sofa. Life’s too short for that—sometimes, you need to redecorate the entire room or even move to Africa!

And now, my dream has come true. I live just outside Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, surrounded by nature and wildlife. Three giraffes, antelopes, and warthogs are my neighbors, sharing the landscape around my home. Inside my yard, my eight dogs and six cats provide constant joy and loving companionship. At night, I am serenaded by the calls of jackals and the distinctive cracking of an eland's knees as it passes by my bedroom window.

In the summer, the chorus of frogs in the waterhole in front of my house might keep me awake, but it always brings a smile to my face. On some nights, I put on my wellies and gently gather the frogs, relocating them to another spot so they can continue their concert, sharing their symphony with others who will appreciate the nocturnal serenade.

Join me over the coming months as we uncover the finest, most hidden gems, and unforgettable experiences Namibia has to offer. Through this column, I aim to spark your wanderlust and share the stunning beauty and wonder of the places I’ve had the privilege to discover.
